Date Available: Beta 1/9, Prod 2/6

Which customers are impacted?:

Any customer that uses the Blend borrower or lender application.

How to turn on:

  • This feature will be automatically enabled for all customers on the dates listed above.

Purpose of Update and Benefit:

Blend now supports additional income details for military pay. This release also provides support for other details like rank, military branch, and duty station address.

Current Behavior:

Currently, we have limited details on the different types of military pay. This is all combined into one field called military entitlements.

New Behavior:

Now available for both the borrower and lender application, the additional questions and fields below are now supported:

  • Military branch (dropdown)
  • Rank (dropdown)
  • Duty station address
  • Base allowance for housing
  • Base allowance for subsistence
  • Do you have special pay?
  • If yes, we support flight pay, combat pay, hazard pay, overseas pay, prop pay, variable housing allowance, clothes allowance

These income type additions apply to new applications or existing applications where income has not been filled in yet. If a borrower has already filled in their military income in the old format, then we do not show the new fields. The user must first clear out the existing income, which will then prompt the new fields to appear. This is so that we don't override existing data with these new changes.

Borrower View

From the borrower perspective, users will be able to see the additional military questions and fields in the “Getting Started” and “Income” section of the borrower application.

The additional military questions shown in the “Getting Started” section that are now available are “Select your military branch,” “What is your rank?,” and “Which duty station are you buying a home near?”

Please note that in order to see the additional military questions, the “Are you currently an active military personnel, a veteran, or a surviving spouse?” question is required to toggle to “Yes.”

Additional Note: For the question “What is your current military status?,” if the user selects the options “Retired, Discharged, or Separated from Service” or “Surviving Spouse,” the additional military questions will not apply to those groups.

The additional military questions shown in the “Income” section that are now available are “Base Allowance for housing (monthly),” “Base Allowance for subsistence (monthly),” and “Do you have any special pay.”

Note: The “Base Monthly Salary” field will pre-fill based on the rank selected from the Getting Started section.

If the user toggles “Special pay” to “Yes,” the additional (optional) military fields will populate for the user to fill out.

Lender View

From the lender's perspective, users will be able to see the additional military questions and fields in the “Borrower Information” and “Employment” section of the lender application.

Users will be able to view and edit in the “Duty station address” and “Military rank” in the borrower information section of the lender application.

Note: If the lender invites the borrower to start the application first, some of the borrower’s military information will be prefilled here (ie., rank, branch, etc.)

Users will also be able to view and edit in the “Employment” section of the lender application. The additional military field in this section is “Rank,” “Base allowance for housing (monthly),” “Base allowance for subsistence (monthly),” and “Do you have special pay?”

A reminder that the user will need to select “Yes” for special pay in order for the additional fields to populate.

Additional Reminder: If the lender invites the borrower to start the application first, some of the borrower’s military information will be prefilled here (ie., base allowance, rank, etc.) Please note that these additional military questions and fields will not show up in the mobile application.
